If only I was… by Elim Kim

If only I was born in a wealthier family

with limitless water and food,

the stars in the sky wouldn’t be cursing my birth

because I’d be in the happiest mood.

If only I was created a regular body

without a single birth defect,

I, of course, wouldn’t be like a wolf, so lonely

howling at midnight in neglect.

My wishes aren’t few, but not one comes true.

like a speck of tiny dust, I’m forgotten.

They haven’t a clue, to step into my dirty shoes,

I’m as hated as an apple that’s rotten.

Black, white, red, blue.

I’m counting the cars racing by.

Crouched in the streets, my mind full of dreams.

Well, dreams can’t change any real life.

Why is money our top priority?

Compared to love, it’s only a pebble.

The unstoppable discrimination in society…

The power of wealth makes mountains tremble.

Oh time, please pass quicker, oh time, fly by fast!

My life painfully cries like a rooster.

I’ve suffered, but all these are unchangeable past,

we can only develop our future.

The sun shines, leaves fall, snow drops and dissolves.

The cycle of seasons repeats.

And after all these years, hasn’t my life evolved?

No! luck and love are defeated.

The waterfall of tears drops down like madness,

Like shattered glass, my spirit breaks.

Does the crying define my undying sadness?

Or are these the tears of hope?

Black, white. One, two.

I’m counting my everlasting dreams.

Though I may be a poor and miserable unfortunate,

One day, luck and love will greet me.

One day.

Until then, I’ll wait.

Like the stars in the sky,

my hopes will never die.
